Adult/Couples Only?: This resort is now adults only, but was not when I was there.
Time of Year/Weather: This trip was taken in mid-April of 1997. The weather was sunny and around 85 - 90 degrees the whole time I was there. It was absolutely beautiful.
Length of Trip?: 4 days/3 nights
Was this an All-Inclusive Resort?: Yes
Approximate per person cost?: $750 per person from Detroit, MI (DTW) purchased through NWA World Vacations.
Were there any hidden or extra costs?: There were no hidden costs in this all-inclusive package. Everything was truly included - airfare, hotel, airport transfers, food, drinks, and all taxes and fees including the Mexican departure tax.
Describe room accommodations (view, decor, cleanliness, etc.): The rooms were spacious and clean. Every room had a balcony and a large bathroom. The rooms were either lagoon-view or ocean-view (and they really were a true view of the ocean). Some of the lagoon-view rooms had obstructed views but you could at least see some of the lagoon.
Describe food/meals (presentation, quality, etc.): Most meals were served in an ocean-front restaurant and were buffet style. There was also a gourmet restaurant that was included, all you needed to do was make reservations. For those who wished to snack between main meals, there was a lobby bar and a beach-front bar that served hotdogs, hamburgers, and french fries from lunch until dinner. I found the food to be quite delicious. Every meal offered at least one or two entrees that were out of the ordinary, such as baby octopus or refried bananas. Of course the labels in front of the warming trays were in Spanish, so most of us did not know what an item was unless we asked. I found this to be beneficial because it allowed me the courage to try new food without knowing what they were in advance or having pre-conceived opinions.
Describe staff and service: The staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful. All employees spoke English and were completely understandable. I never had any problems with service.
Onsite Activities: The resort offered a wide variety of activities including cooking lessons, dance lessons, scuba lessons in the pool, water aerobics, nightly themed dinners, entertainment with audience participation encouraged, and nightly trips to different nightclubs. They also offered water sports but these were at a nearby facility, not on the resort grounds. Transportation was provided both ways, free of charge.
Offsite Activities: I did not try any offsite activities on this trip to Cancun. (See the Club Las Velas review for some offsite activity reports.)
Local Points of Interest: Cancun is famous for its nightlife.
My favorite local nightclub was Senor Frog's. I would highly recommend that anyone visiting Cancun stop in and check out this unusual bar. There is a highly-charged, energetic crowd that dances the night away. The floor is covered in sawdust and dancing on the tables is encouraged. The popular drinks are served in "yard" glasses, which make great souvenirs. And best of all, there is a tube waterslide that is totally enclosed and runs from the ceiling, weaving its way around the bar, until it dumps out into the lagoon. This was a popular diversion for many of the partiers and was open only for short periods of time during the night.
For a more relaxed, yet nightclub, experience, I recommend Christine's. This is a very classy nightclub that has both young and older clientele. They have balloon drops and a male dance review that starts each new dance session. This allows people a chance to cool down ad be entertained before hitting the dance floor again.
Value for the cost?: Good
Overall Rating (10 being best)?: 9
Additional Comments: I feel that Cancun is an overall good value for the money and would appeal to everyone, whether a sun-worshipper, bargain hunter, or party animal.
